Does anyone know what would cause a scape to spiral like this? Of course it's one of the top 3 I want to work with this year.



GRRRR. I don't know why this is posting sideways. I had some do that on FB today too. It's corrected and saved on my computer.

I have had a couple that were curved but not to that extent. One was actually blocked by the Name Plate, I think a couple of others were blocked by very thick foliage causing them to turn under and curve. So all I can suggest is that something was blocking the scape.

I had one do this also (there could be more, but one noticed). I was able to dig down a bit and free the end of the scape from the ground. At least maybe it will still bloom, albeit sideways or upside down

I would like to know what causes it also. Like Larry, I think maybe when it was growing it was blocked by something near the surface. I've seen leaves do this a lot, especially as I've been watching seedlings grow and paying attention a little more closely to their development.

I think it may be a leaf from the scape that is still attached, sometimes you can cut it loose.

I'm thinking that this curving ( although not the normal type of fasciation) could also be called a fasciated scape. Usually the scapes become deformed when developing from the meristem and they have a flattened thick look. However, I may be wrong! I too have had scapes bend if the name plate gets in their way.

I seem to have some fascinated scapes in the garden every year now, and I thought that is what it might be at first. But I think Fred recognized the curved leaf that looks like it is caught in the ground and is blocking the scape.

Thank you all for your input. I'll check it tomorrow and make sure there is nothing in the way. It probably won't make a difference at this point but at least I'll learn more about it.

I have had a couple daylily plants do that and I believe mine turned out to be Spring Sickness. It makes the leaves and growth deformed. My plants recovered but they sure looked weird for a while.
