Well, if you take a picture of something with your camera at Home Depot (or wherever), then it belongs to you. I know some places (like Walmart) are wary of people taking pictures so you might just want to either tell them what you're doing and let them know you'll put the name of the business in the caption (which I always do) or tell them you're taking a picture so you can look it up and see if it's something you'd want to grow. I know a lot of tags have those codes you can scan with your phone, but I don't know how to do that and I prefer to go to a non-biased source for my plant info - like the comments in our database!
If you look at some of the pictures in the database, they are photos from commercial websites and catalogs. But they usually include a watermark and in the caption people will post something like, "Courtesy of Melanie's Perennials." Honestly, I prefer pictures taken by our members because I feel they are more realistic. Obviously, a plant catalog or website is going to show the best possible picture to entice you to buy the plant.
