I have no dought that this ID is correct. Thank you very much for everyone's help. I think we might have had this sooner if the large tree had not grown so perfectly straight with no limbs. Thanks again!

You might have still been scratching your head if Frillylily's mom hadn't had a plant "'china....? something'" Hilarious!

Amazing! Great search and discovery. I was searching a couple of hours last night, w/ naught to show...

It was a joint effort, from first mention by Frillylily it was Sue's persistence which brought it back.

From the herbarium specimen which Sue posted, the ball started to roll into home goal!

Thanks Dave. I read your post, but at first glance, because of the branching, it did not look like the same plant.

This has been amazing. Congratulations to the investigators for your wonderful work. Now, how much recovery time do you need before someone finds another stumper? I really want to watch this process again. I tip my hat to you. I tip my hat to you. I tip my hat to you.
Can't complain too loud about how the ball bounces when I'm the one who dropped it.

I'd love to see this process again, but I imagine stumpers like that are fairly rare. It was great work by all of you!

When my mom had the plant, I remember thinking it had the most beautiful leaves. It was a shame it grew too large and got ugly. If she'd known more about plants and pruning, she might have been able to keep it around longer.

When looking at the info on this plant, I did see that there was a dwarf version. That might be better for the house.

I didn't know that. I'll have to see if I can find a vendor. Now that this thread has revived my memories of it, I'd love to grow it.

I agree. Best ID ever! It was tons of fun. My apologies for thinking it was a cell tower...

My neighbor has this China Doll tree. He laughs when he says it doesn't know it's supposed to be a house plant. Since it has been beat up by some high wind events it looks nothing like the lovely, tall, straight one in this thread but I managed to get a good photo of the leaves and seed pods back in August of 2014:

Super ID on this 'mystery' tree ! When I saw it was in Central Florida ... anything put outside grows bigger !
Proud of y'all ... I tip my hat to you.

Wow a lot happened while I was gone. Just wondering, does anyone have a photo of a China Doll tree that looks similar to this one in shape? All the links I followed the branches spread wide, and did not stay in a perfect column. Maybe I missed it in one of the links?

That link always pulls up nothing for me. I tried to view it when it was first posted, but couldn't then either.
