Hi, this poppy has appeared in my garden this spring. Could anybody identify its variety? Thanks!

Welcome!

I believe its a Shirley Poppy, Papaver rhoeas. I have never seen one that color though.

I thought the same Daisy, but I couldn't find a purple one of P. rhoeas.

I know there's several species of Papaver, but trying to search for a purple species brings up lots of purple opium poppies. Rolling my eyes.

Finally, I might have found a clue.

Look at Papaver argemone.

I'm not sure the leaves are a match but it would be interesting to see if the seed pods have prickles on them. It could be a natural cross.

Check this site "Sand-Mohn (Papaver argemone), Illustration", it will enlarge if you click on it.

The flower heads droop before opening, as described on the botany.cz link above, and it mentions they are red or purple/red with often black blotches at the base . Some of the leaves on the illustratioin do match this plant.

Great, thanks a lot!
I will take a better picture and upload it when a new flower comes out.
