Good heavens Holly. That Purple Haze has gone crazy. You might want to get it into the ground or into a much larger pot. Very impressive.
And just look at all that lovely color from the others. They are all looking wonderful Holly.

S. 'Raspberry Ice' 1/28/2011 and 2 months later 3/25/2011.

Thumb of 2011-03-27/valleylynn/e289e6

I now see why it is called 'Raspberry Ice'. What a beautiful color and texture it is.

Everyone of my plants received last year and this year are so healthy even after constant rain. What amazing plants.

As a photographer my main tip for you is to back up a bit more from the plants. Looks like the focal length for your camera is a bit further away. If you photograph from a bit further distance the image will be in focus (even though the plants will be smaller). You can then crop in closer to fill the frame with the focused image!

Great job, and congrats on the nice plants!

twitcher said:Problem is, you may not see the damage. I did a three way purchase with NH two years ago with two other semp friends. We did the 2 for 1 sale, then split the plants among the three of us, two getting 1 each of the large plants and 1 getting the offsets. We each had preferences defined, so the best plants went to the "preferred" person and the others divided accordingly. The plants were bare root, but we had a couple start to rot from the shipping and handling, that didn't become apparent right away. So now, I always plant and then wait about a week before watering. Just my preference. I'm cautious by nature - I always actually stop at stop signs and look both ways!

Though Twitcher doesn't need my concurrence for his (sorry!) reasoning, here is the scientific reason for why waiting 7 days or so after shipping will help prevent rot: All plants receive some damage during shipping/handling. This leaves moist open plant cells in the damaged areas (may not even be visible to naked eye). These wounds are an open invitation to the microbes responsible for decomposition, add water to the mix (i.e. watering soon after arrival) and you have created the potential perfect storm for rot. Bacteria/fungi in the soil are moved into the damaged tissue and thrive in the moist nutrient rich environment. And Voila! your favorite new order has begun to rot!

However, if you wait for a few days before watering damaged areas dry down and the plant has time to wall off the damaged cell areas, which prevents entry of the opportunistic bacteria/fungi which are responsible for rotting.

(I hope this makes sense, having a migraine today because of rain!)

Welcome and hope you share some photos of your new semps with us when they arrive. Sounds like you've been growing semps for some time. Very good advice...supports Twit's advice. Smiling

Actually I haven't grown them at all! *gasp*!! I've only just started ordering them. However, I have waaaay too many years of graduate school in agronomy and horticulture.

We've just moved to a new area, and things in life have conspired to cause me to be home more soon. So, growing and collecting these plants seems a good fit for my growing/collecting "issues". Between growing the semps (and some sedums) and gardening I can hardly wait to get started on gardening season this year. Garden is tilled just needs to be raked and set up... then I'll have to dig out the front bed and amend the soil for the all the plants I've ordered recently!

Thanks for the welcome!

I do believe we have another sempaholic in our midst. Hurray! I am so glad you found your way here Terri.

I see the writing on the wall already. Between twit (he) and Terri (she) we are fixing to learn scientific things. I love that, it will keep our brains from deteriorating.
Can't wait to see your photos Terri.

Twit is taking his finally exams this weekend so won't be around for a while.

Yes. I have had many incarnations in this lifetime! Artist and Scientist. I worked on rice for my Masters and tomatoes for my doctorate, (I was almost finished when I had my daughter, who had colic... bye bye doctorate!)

Before we moved to Georgia I had a photography business, while I raised the aforementioned colicky daughter...

Now, I just lurk around the internets and spread the love around! I tip my hat to you.
