Although I'm "older" and I have been gardening and caring for indoor "houseplants" for more than 50 years, I distinctly remember 10 or so years ago when I posted on a gardening website for the very first time ever to ask a question about a particular plant that was new to me. Most members were very kind and helpful but one particular lady was quite nasty and replied that she really wished I'd read through the different threads to find my answer because the same question had been asked and answered numerous times and that I should have taken the initiative to read before asking questions! ! I was a bit taken aback and it was quite awhile before I posted again. Because of that response, it was a year or more before I ever visited the forum for that particular plant again but luckily I didn't get scared away from the entire site because I met so many wonderful people there and learned a lot from many of them!
Some people may sign up to this because they are new to gardening and plant care and currently only have one question to ask. Perhaps a friend gave them a plant as a gift, or perhaps they received a plant from a loved ones funeral and for sentimental reasons they desperately want to do everything possible to keep the plant alive and are asking for general information for the particular plant. Most plant newbies don't realize that location or zone is important when identifying plants or trying to figure out what is causing issues with a plant, etc.
It doesn't bother me if someone has not added a location to their profile. I can gently ask for more information such as what part of the country they are located (doesn't have to be city or state necessarily, maybe just NE U.S., SW U.S., etc. or if it's a plant they are growing indoors as a houseplant, what type of lighting can they provide, what are their usual watering habits, type of soil used, etc. There are many people who do not want to divulge an exact city or even state so all we can do is try to offer suggestions and help as best we can.
