All About Goldenrod

By Sharon
September 21, 2011

It isn't goldenrod that makes you sneeze. It's the ragweed that grows beside it. Let's take a look at this golden beauty that many would like to banish. Aunt Bett and I never could convince Mom that goldenrod didn't cause her allergies; maybe I can convince you.

What y'all don' know is, I sound jus' like Aunt Bett.
Got her hair too. An' her shape (or lack thereof, since i most resemble a T square, but then so did she).
I reckon them wil'flowrs don' know th' diffrence, Shoe.

Here's a story for you:

Aunt Bett never had children, though she raised a young man who was an orphan, seems like there were family ties but I can't remember now. Anyway she had no children of her own. I had been away from the mountains for about 13 years or so when she died, and though I'd seen her fairly often during that time, I hadn't lived near her in all those years, school and then work had taken me to the Lexington/L'ville area. Anyway, I went back for the funeral.

As I stood beside the open coffin (the 'way of things' back then) some of her old friends kept looking at me and whispering among themselves. Finally one of them came up to me and said: "Now which one of 'em is you?"

Me: "Which one of what am I?"

She: "Well, I know Betty Ann ain't had no girls, but I sweah, you could pass for hers. Now jes' which one of her kin is you?"

I keep trying to live up to that.
Heh!

Still am.

She was very serious, though.
I fell a little short there.

So when we see your picture, we can picture Aunt Bett! I like that!
Sharon, does goldenrod do okay as a dried flower, or will it just turn to fuzz and fall apart?

Fuzz, I think. If I remember my 'scientific' experiment, it was mostly fuzz and dried leaf crumbles. It doesn't retain it's color, but might have if I had hung it upside down to dry. I kept mine in water till the blooms turned brown, I think. If you want to dry a flower, I don't think it needs to stay in water.
I'm really not an expert on dried flowers though, I'm the one who left roses on the dash of my car in the hot July sun so they'd dry really fast. They did.

You might be able to dip the goldenrod in hot wax. I still have some waxed flowers from my grandmother's funeral. 'bout 20 years now. I don't remember the method but I'm sure you can Google it.

Ditto what's said above...everybody loves you and your stories, Sharon!

And 'taint nuttin' wrong with boo-hooing, I do it all the time. (I'm the sentimental sort, ya know.) Besides, just like feet, hands, eyeballs, noses, tastebuds, etc, we have tear ducts for a reason so might as well use 'em!

As for dignity...here ya go...

LOL

That reminds me of when I was in the army, we were told always to maintain our 'military bearing', and not let emotions get the best of us. Our first sgt. gave one soldier a ball-bearing to keep in his pocket to remind him!
