A neighbor sent a cutting of a branch home with my husband tonight wanting to know if I knew what it is. I don't have a clue.

It has thorns on it and the flowers have a light fragrance. He said it has red berries on it in the fall. I will try to get a picture of the whole plant but may take me a day or two.

My first thought was Pyracantha, since you mention thorns and red berries.

I don't think I've ever seen a Hawthorn, but I'm sure I've never seen a Pyracantha that looked like that!

Like Leftwood, I was going to suggest hawthorn but the hawthorns I'm familiar with don't have simple (unlobed) leaves. I believe there are some that do though.

Here is a picture of a leaf closer from the main stem of the branch I was given to identify it. The leaves are taped down because they are starting to wilt and had curled inwards. The texture of the leaf is rough almost like fine sandpaper on both top and bottom when running the fingers down towards the center but feel smoother when running them outwards toward the top of the leaf
