I own a jade that is now over 15 years old .......when I first bought it I planted it in a decrorative vase over the years I never transplanted it because I thought the material the container was made of was magic.......now I have about 6 upright stems where there was once 1 and it is over 2 feet ....I recently noted that the plant is sending out air roots ....does this mean it shoud be repotted?

Air roots can mean it is hurting and planning ahead. Since it has not been repotted for a long time, I say do it. Gene

You are in for a chore. A plant that old and that large is going to be very heavy and awkward to handle. It will be almost impossible for your to re-pot it without breaking off leaves (at a minimum) and even branches. You need a good, strong helper to aid you in this. The root-ball itself will more than likely be tightly packed in the bowl, weighing a good deal on its own.

I would repot that as well..and be ready with some smaller containers for the extra stems you see.

Can you take a photo, I always love seeing very matured jades.

I should have documented (with pictures) all the large jade plants I have left outside during winter. Some have been truly huge but I had no space to overwinter them. I just removed what was left of two of those large-size jade from 18" porcelain bowls so that I could put other plants in them. The bowls are antiques and far more valuable than any plant that will live in them. I think a couple of adenium will one day take up residence in those bowls.

Can you send us a photo? I'm trying to visualize a jade in a vase and I have never seen one with air roots. BTW, they only get 3' x3'. Its almost there.

No, the emergence of air roots is NOT a reason to repot. The air roots often emerge when there is an abundance of humidity for this plant, which comes from arid regions. The "magic" in your vase is that it is has not had its roots disturbed all these years and you have managed to provide proper light and the right watering routine. If you repot, all of that magic will disappear.

If a plant is healthy, don't do anything radical such as repotting. If it is getting too tall, then pruning is the answer.
