This was split from a much larger plant last fall; it is doing well and beginning to bloom ( the mother plant continuously blooms spring until Nov with 20 or more blooms at a time). It gives me much pleasure, but I have not been able to identify it and haven't seen it in the shops. The leaves are prone to disfigurement. What causes this and how can i avoid the problem?

I think it might be Cape Primrose. I think @Njiris has many and could ID it for sure. Perhaps could also answer your questions. Here is one that looks very similar to me. Streptocarpus 'Crystal Ice'

I am almost certain that the plant shown is a Streptocarpus. I would not make a guess to its identity. A number of the Dibley streps from the UK are well known for their long bloom cycle.

Regarding the leaves, I would make it a point when watering to keep them dry.

I came onto this site myself for help in identifying a plant and they did! The people here are knowledge as well as friendly!

Regarding the leaf damage on your plant, I found an interesting utube video on cleaning up a Streptocarpus plant for a show.

About 2/3rds through, they note that the plant in question has a spot of mildew on the leaf. They simply trim this area off and comment that in about a week to 10 days the leaf will grow back.

If you are getting mildew, you might be overwatering your plant. Again, avoid getting water on leaves. The following tube video might be of help.
