From afar, it looked like some red flowers blooming, but there is obviously a problem! This pest is on two trees, but they are not next to each other- they are about 20 feet apart. Does anyone know what it is? Maybe a type of caterpillar? (And how to treat it?)
A cherry and an apple, I consider them wild because we did not plant them and they are on the edge of woods. I think you are correct- the bark is also affected on the apple tree, which has not been doing well anyway. Last year the apple had gypsy moth, this year it doesn't as far as I've seen.
On a quick look I didn't find a reference for the same thing on apple but most references to galls on apple are for more serious problems than this type of gall. In general galls like these spindle galls don't cause any real problems for the tree.
