This is a picture of spindle gall on Prunus (caused by an eriophyid mite):

On a quick look I didn't find a reference for the same thing on apple but most references to galls on apple are for more serious problems than this type of gall. In general galls like these spindle galls don't cause any real problems for the tree.

Not sure what might be affecting the bark on the apple, I presume it's not exactly the same thing?
