Liz,
Your seedlings look great. That is very exciting!

Yellow King is an herbaceous peony. I don't think it is very common. It is actually a pale pink single with a big yellow centre.

I discovered a bud on one of my three year old seedlings that I moved last week. Even after being transplanted, it sent up a bud. What a little trooper. Here is a picture (a terrible one nodding ), but it shows the bud on the little thing.

I found a listing for tree peony plants for sale at our local city on-line ads "UsedVictoria".

This happened to be someone living near me (I live less than a km from zoned farmland but my area only has city lots). He had tree peony seedlings for sale and thought the mother is "Tria". Looked up Tria and from what I can find there is no reported fertility. I went anyway to get a couple of seedlings. He only had the one tree peony and stated that it kept dropping seeds which then sprout. For five dollars a piece I couldn't go wrong.

The mother plant that he has shows the typical three buds at the end of the blooming stem on several stems. Sadly, no blooms because he had just dug it up to divide this month as it was too big for the spot. So all the green growth was wilted.

Anyways, I'm guessing I have 5-10 years to wait for blooms! The bigger seedling is about a foot tall.

Hurrah for volunteer seedlings!

Thank you! I am excited to see what it is. I checked yesterday and it is about the size of a large marble now. All of the seedlings I moved this spring are doing well, but this is the only one that is going to bloom. I hope yours blooms next year Crossing Fingers!

You never know, at a foot tall you may see blooms sooner! Congratulations on such a great find. I love classified ads Hurray!

Here are some photos of the peonies grown from seedlings found in my garden.

This is the first one that I saved, probably about 5-6 years ago.

This is the newest one that I just moved this spring. It is 3 years old and this is its first bloom.

This one is 5 years old. This produces variable flowers with some being more double than others. It also fades to develop a silver edge. I will take some more photos of this one.

Pretty seedlings. Congratulations.
Were they open pollinated and self seeded? Or how did they come about?

Yes, they were. It was really just an accidental thing. When weeding the garden, I come upon peony seedlings. I do deadhead my peonies after they bloom, but I obviously miss a few! Several years ago, I decided to keep a few of the seedlings and grow them along. These are the plants I ended up with. I should try to do some actual planned crosses. This year I have about 100 daylily seedlings grown from crosses, so why not add peonies!

This year I moved five peony seedlings from my perennial beds.

Doing your own crosses, in whatever plant area you love, can be so rewarding. Accidental beauty from self sewn seedlings aren't too bad either. Lovey dubby It all takes patience in waiting, but the outcomes, very special.

Here are some more pictures of the pink seedling to show the variability of the flowers. Also, as it ages, it develops a silver edge.

Hi Valerie, those are nice flowers from the seedlings. I find the first two quite appealing.

Beautiful blooms from your seedlings Valerie! I wonder if I should stop fully deadheading my peonies, and see if I get any seedlings in the garden.
