We didn't plant it but would like to know the ID on this one and if it's worth keeping. Thanks.

The leaves make me think of a birch. Whatever it is, it is too close to the house.

I know but, depending on what it is (desirable or not) we'll either delete it or move it. Thanks for the reply.

Do you have any wild plums nearby, or have you had a plum tree on a wild plum stock?

I have something similar coming up all over my garden, I took out a grafted Victoria plum tree last year which appears to be growing new plants off roots which run miles. For the last few years I have had these things growing further from the tree than you would think possible but I wondered if squirrels had planted plum seeds elsewhere. They are a nuisance, you can't get rid of them as they keep growing off seemingly forever living horizontal roots.

No plums around this area. It's probably the work of the squirrels, Janet.

All I can say is that it looks like a Prunus of some sort Arlene. There's similar leaves on some ornamental cherry trees. I think I can see some glands on the petiole just behind the base of the leaf.

Compare, this is an American Plum ..
