Here's a tutorial on building a simple trellis to support tomatoes even during the worst weather conditions.

Excellent tip, and a great project description! I always have a good laugh when I see the pitiful tomato cages offered for sale in nurseries.

A T-post driver is cheap, simple, and an almost indispensible tool for any serious gardener.

For those who may not be aware, the wire in these cattle panels is 4 gauge (.2043") which is just the thing for supporting a thriving stand of tomato vines.

Thank you Ken,

I have to agree with you about how inadequate the store bought tomato cages are. I have 8 of them and will push them into the ground up to the first ring for my Pepper plants.

Again thank you,

I totally agree -- the ring-type tomato cages work fine for peppers and eggplant (and flowers that need some support); for tomatoes, not so much!

I agree The store bought cages are too short and very flimsy.
