Can a bromelaid be used in a container planting that will be in full sunlight most of the day? I am on Long Island and the temps can get into the high 90s.

@carlinav. Generally speaking, bromeliads are shade-loving plants. I imagine there are bromeliads that tolerate full sun but all I grow should have shade between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. I am in the deep south though.

Take a moment and go to your "Profile" and update your "Public Profile", giving your location. City/state is best but the USDA zone is better than nothing.

Indoors, most Bromeliads can handle direct sunlight. However, outdoor sun is much more intense and few Bromeliad can tolerate direct rays of the outdoor sun except for very early or late in the day, as Ken indicated. What species of Bromeliad do you have? There are many different kinds with different light and temperature tolerances.

Maybe if the bromeliad would be shaded by taller plants in the planter, it would do ok. But I wouldn't take a chance on putting it in there until the tall plants get established.

How about posting a picture of the container you're thinking of putting it in?

There are plenty of Bromeliads that love full sun. I have a lot around my yard in full Florida sunshine. Other absolutely detest the sun. So - pick your species and variety!
