Hello all! I'm leaving this morning for the 2016 APS convention. I'm driving out and plan to take advantage of the trip to visit some places Tracey recommended along the way. I'll try to post a few pics during the trip and will post MASSIVE amounts when I get home! Looking forward to sharing the trip with all of you, let me know if there are any questions you'd like asked of specific people or pics/observations of specific varieties so I can watch for them. Already have a few questions for Carol Adelman about her new Itohs and when they'll be made available and searching for a peony at Sissoons.....can you tell I'm excited??!!

Liz, you should visit Olbrich Botanical Gardens at Madison, many beautiful peonies at that garden.

I did visit Olbrich Botanical Garden, littlebin! And it was my favorite of the day but only because it was bigger than Allen Centenial Gardens. First off---peonies LOVE Wisconsin! I've never seen such huge peonies--shrubs and blooms both! Visited 4 places today with blooming peonies and all were huge. I could've spent hours at either Olbrich or Allen Centenial Gardens. Both had beautiful peonies in bloom amongst other perennials and annuals as well as lots of trees. Both places had types of smaller blooming trees that smelled amazing--definitely adding to my garden if the zone gods are kind and allow them to grow in zone 4b. First one was a fringe tree that was blooming at ACG, could smell it across the entire garden. I was a bit disappointed at first that they didn't have a seating area really close to it but I don't think they would ever get people to leave if they did!

The other that was at OBG was aa Abelia Mosanensis Caprifoliaceae. I smelled that one as soon as I walked through the doors out to the garden. I actually sat down on a bench to write and thank Tracey for passing info on these amazing gardens right there within smelling distance. It was a beautiful morning, beautiful smells, beautiful flowers, birds chirping; probably would've sat there for the rest of the day if the peonies had been within sight!

The other peony garden Tracey passed to me was the West Madison Agricultural Research Garden. That was the first place I went this morning, mainly because it was open the earliest and I wanted to hit everything in the Madison area in a single day. They have 50 varieties that have been in place 6-7 years, arrayed in 2 huge beds of only peonies. While the layouts of the botanical gardens were more pleasing to the eye the peonies at the Research Garden were every bit as gorgeous! They also had several other beds of different flowers, spent quite a bit of time looking at the various baptistias, never knew there were so many varieties with so many different flower colors. They also had some very pretty mixed gardens on the grounds as well.

The last place I stopped was the Heard Museum, they have an Anderson Itoh Memorial Garden. The flowers here were beautiful but the garden layout isn't as visitor friendly, can't get close enough to the flowers! They do supply a handout with the varieties mapped but it was raining pretty good while I was there and I didn't find one until after I'd viewed the flowers and was soaked!

Okay, I'm going to close this post and do a 2nd one with just peony and garden pics. I'm not going to label them right now, I did take pics of labels but my old eyes don't appreciate the tiny screen. I'll put labels on once I'm home if anyone wants to know a variety. Hope you all enjoy them!

Yes, Wowee! So beautiful! Love the companion plants that go with the peonies-they show off the peonies really nicely. Besides the rain, what is the average temp of the day? The peonies look so nice. I wonder if they get the heatwave up there.

Alex, the cupped white/blush was marked Pink Venus, it was at Olbrich. Karen, it actually felt hot to me but probably because I'm not used to humidity. Local forecast this morning had the highs around 80. I know what you mean about the companions, I took just about the same amount of group peony/companion plant pics as peony flower pics! I'll post a lot more once I get home. I'd certainly advise any gardener going through Madison WI to visit at least Olbrich and Allen gardens, both absolutely gorgeous. And I never would've known they were there without my gardening friends here on the forum!

Just made it in to Green Bay. Stopped by the botanical garden but they were closed for an event, hope to see it before we leave. Shopped at Scenic View Landscaping on Tracey's recommendation and left with a couple of Itohs and several tree peonies! The back of my remtal car is going to be full!

So yesterday we had a bbq at a park on the lake to open the convention. We met Tracey and her daughter there, so wonderful to meet another forum member in person! There was a small amusement park connected with some rides and my daughter convinced me, my MIL and SIL to get on some spinning rides...no other activities attempted! We're on a bus now headed to Klehms Song Sparrow then on to Sissons Gardens. Expect more pics tonight!

Second year doing a hybridizing peony workshop. This time at Solaris Farms. Lots of great information and prime time for tree peony blooms also many herbaceous blooming.

Nice to meet you Liz and your daughter. Forum people are real people. Hilarious! Nice to put a face with a name. (Good thing I didn't go on that ride. Motion sickness.)

Lots to see today and the weather perfect!

I agree, Tracey! It was wonderful to meet you and your daughter in person. It makes these friendships based on shared interests rather than shared experiences real, doesn't it? Hopefully we'll meet even more people from this forum in the future.

So today we went to Klehm's Song Sparrow, Sissons Historical Garden and one of the APS officer's gardens. Klehm's was what anyone who's gone to a peony farm before would expect but was a revelation to me-I have never seen so many peonies in one place before! I saw varieties that I'd never heard of that were amazing as well as the biggest, prettiest examples of peonies I have in my garden now. I'll say it again, peonies LOVE Wisconsin! This must be the most peony friendly soil on earth. Here are a few pics, will post more when I get home.

Sissons Garden is in the middle of a neighborhood. One of the local members of the Wisconsin Peony Society said it was just a mowed field for years, that no one knew there were peonies until it was left unmoved for a while. That discovery was followed by a period of trying to find out who actually owned the land before it was finally established as a public garden. We toured another member's garden then walked down the road and through someone's yard to get to it; it appears to be completely surrounded by private property. There were some lovely peonies in both gardens but I was disappointed to see that Tinka Philips, a variety that LG and I have wanted for a few years, wasn't in bloom yet. Even more disappointing was being told that even here locally the members knew of no one who sells it. Guess I'll just have to hope to see it on one of the peony society's auctions or something. Below is a few pics from both Betty's and Sisson Gardens.
