my wife and I moved to a new house in Baltimore, md last November and the previous owners left this tree for us. We love it, but despite hours of Internet searching and identification apps we still haven't been able to figure it out.
(It typically has a lot more leaves on it but we were out of town last week and it didn't get much water)

Adam. Can you confirm whether the leaf arrangement is opposite or alternate, I can't see the twigs quite well enough to tell. On one they look opposite but on another they don't but the picture isn't clear. Can you also post a picture showing the whole plant, please?
