Hi everyone! I am in Delray beach which is southeast. I really love yellow and blue flowers in a garden bed. Does anyone have blue and yellow together in your garden or a planter? If so, what flowering plants do use that are hardy in my conditions? I have the blue sky vine, but I am looking for something I can put in garden bed.

Jen, a nice plant for blue flowers all season is Evolvulus, commonly called Blue Daze. It's a low-growing spreading clump like plant - maybe 10in. tall and 2ft wide at maturity - with intense blue flowers about an inch across . Easy to grow and available everywhere. Wait! running outside to snap a picture of mine. (forgot to note, the flowers close in the late afternoon)

The other really wonderful blue is Plumbago which will grow to be a large shrub but you can prune it to any size that suits you. Again, easy to grow and available.


For yellow, Hmmm I love yellow but not the really bright, chrome yellow of a lot of flowers. Golden yellow or pale pastel yellow are more my preference. In fall/winter/spring I grow nasturtiums (annual from seed) that are pale yellow. They give up in the heat of summer though. For most of the year color, Bulbine is excellent (it's actually a type of succulent) but I don't have any right now. I have Spathoglottis (another ground orchid) that are pale yellow with other colors mixed in though. They need some shade in the afternoon.

These yellow dwarf cannas are a beautiful color with subtle pink mottling on the petals, love the sun and heat and can take any amount of water you (or mother nature) give them. They're always available at Lowe's and will keep on blooming almost year round if you cut off the spent stems to keep them growing new ones.

Thank you so much for all your info. I really really like the blue daze. I am going to the nursery tomorrow to see if they have that one. The spath is also gorgeous because I love the orchid flower. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me!

I second Elaine's recommendation for the Plumbago, I have seen some fabulous specimens in So. Florida. I used to have some lovely pale yellow hibiscus that would mix nicely with light blue.

Jen, the Blue Daze does best if it gets quite a bit of sun, but the Spaths need filtered shade, or just morning sun. So if you're wanting a mixed border you might not do well with those two planted together.

But the Spaths would interplant beautifully with Plumbago because it doesn't mind some shade. Other than needing a little pruning to keep it in bounds, it's an extremely easy plant. I've seen both for sale at my local Lowe's pretty often.

Bottom line, just be a little careful mixing your sun lovers with your shade lovers in a border. Somebody's going to be unhappy.

If you get Blue Daze, see if you can find "Blue My Mind" Blue Daze. It's more compact and the flowers are a deeper blue. Love those!

Id go heavy on the plumbago. Hummers love it to. Some nice yellow daylilies. There are some great 'blue' salvias as well. Yellow lantana. Heck, down there alamanda(sp) , plumeria, hibiscus, you can go wild with the yellow

Cuban buttercup, flowers daily most the year.I can think of lots of yellow, but only truly blue I know is Plumbago, and some hydrangeas. I have blue daze but it doesn't stand out like the large flowers of Plumbago. There is Blue Sky Vine, Thunbergia grandiflora.
