Hah! NOT! I'm just a tree hugger from way back! And plant hugger, tomato hugger, etc.

Nature sure knows what she is doing, bringing plants up, giving them a good education and teaching them to do the best they can for their own good and well-being, kinda like us raising our children and doing the same, eh?

I'm tired and frustrated (working with computer programs, ugh) so gonna go sit, relax and watch The Walton's.

Based on your recommendation I will have to try New Big Dwarf this year. I have always liked Husky Red, which is a hybrid. It has the same thick stem and indeterminate production. I also like the flavor. Not to be confused with Husky Red CHERRY, which is offered every year as seedlings at big box stores. That one I tried and didn't like.

Minnesota Midget is a miniature cantaloupe that produces a 3" or so single size melon that is sweet and tasteful. This is accomplished many days before it's big brothers have mature produce. That variety has been around a long time. Pursuing a near by catalog I see a modern day variety Lil Loupe produces 2 lb fruit. I thought I'd have some this past year but the seed (Gurney's) produced regular sized melons.
I used to grow them through a chain link fence, Growing up they occupied very little space.

Hementia ~ I never considered growing corn as I have limited space but may have to look at reviews on the Blue Jade corn. Interesting...

Jmorth ~ good idea on the chain link fence. I thought your chainlink fencing would be covered with beautiful Gloriosa lilies instead. I did grow some of the Charantais melons on a cattle panel this year but was expecting them to be a tad smaller than they were. I have some seed that are assorted small melons for this next season but will keep the Minnesota midget in mind. I see Pinetree also handles it https://www.superseeds.com/det... Thanks ~ Kristi

Gloriosas were mostly in large pots this year.

I may utilize Pinetree, maybe I'll get the real midget this time.

Those are so pretty. Mine never delivered blooms this summer. It was just so hot that I didn't push them to bloom. I figured they didn't need the added stress. Thanks for sharing the photos!

We are into the growing season so I thought I'd document the compact plants that I have chosen to grow and will try to add reviews throughout the growing season. Perhaps it will serve as a reference for those that want to grow smaller plants.

Cucumbers:
Alibi ~ off to a good start.
Spacemaster ~ fairly large leaved and larger plant
Little Leaf ~ struggles to get started in the cooler spring temps. This one always looks stunted till summer.

Squash:
Bush Delicata
Green Tiger
Sunburst Scallop
Small White Acorn

Tomatoes:
New Big Dwarf ~ liking the stocky, sturdy plants this far. Plants are already in bloom.

The other tomatoes I'm growing are indeterminate so won't consider them dwarf.

Pepper:
Red Skin Sweet

Eggplant:
White Fingers
Ophelia

Dill:
Compatto ~ second year trial
Mariska ~ favorite from last year that lasted well into the summer before bolting.

Basil:
Pistou ~ this is a small, globe type basil that I love.
