A young man often stops to talk to me as he rides by my house on his bike. I have given him a number of plants over the years and he has gifted me with some too. Most of the ones he grows are older ones. He came back today with a daylily bloom to show me and said he wants to give me some this fall. He does not now the name, so I'm hoping someone can ID it for me.

It looks about 7" to me. See photo with ruler. the sepals are medium yellow, the center has quite a bit of green and the ends of the petals are what I would can a light rose and the eye a darker rose. It might also be called a lavender or some other color. The yellow ribs are raised and it does have a mild sweet smell. He said it was tall. There is some diamond dusting.

The first person that gives me a name I am 90% is correct will get a free daylily. You can select from Whispy Rays, Adorable Tiger, Glorious Autumn, Julie Newmar or Lilting Belle. I will ship it to you in the fall.

My guess is Fol De Rol.

Looks like mine late in the day.

My guess, and I am 100% sure this is correct, is that I'm not going to win a daylily in this contest.

How about Miss Jessie / Chloe? I put both because people have them mixed up. Have a joyful day!

Frillylily , I think you got it right! I am such a slow typer and then my auto correct takes the right words and makes them wrong. Many joys every one!

I would say that it is Miss Jesse too. She is blooming in my garden today. I didn't get a photo though. I don't know how to use the camera. Sighing!

O.K. guys I just got up and am going to work soon. I will check out the guesses and let you know the winner when I get home in the morning. I see some photos that sure look close. Thanks for playing along. I know the young man will be excited to know it name. His mother has been growing it for a long time.

Frillylily, looks like you are the winner! You were the first to say Miss Jessie and that's what I've decided it is. Hurray!

Cerulean Star and Fol De Rol both have too much color in the sepals, so I eliminated them. That left Miss Jessie and Cleo. I read a lot on how they have been mixed up over the years and that many of the photos of Cleo online are really Miss Jessie. Cleo is registered as orange red, but I have not really seen any photos that look that color. It is also not registered as a spider and Miss Jessie is. That may have something to do with the date it was registered. Miss Jessie is mentioned as having a fragrance and that is one of the things Mark, the man giving it to me mentioned and I could smell it in the bloom too, so that is why I'm going with Miss Jessie as the correct name. Guess we will never know unless his mother remembers the name when he mentions it to her. The other daylilies he has given me were registered in the 50's also so that makes me think most of the ones in his garden are of that era.

Looked up some info on Miss Jessie and she has 35 children. Looks like hybridizers were still using it for crosses as late as 2004. Scandinavia, one I grow is one of it's children.

Thanks to all for helping me find the name. I tip my hat to you.

I have either Cleo or Miss Jessie and have never set a pod on it. I will have to check when it blooms if it has fragrance.

Miss Jessie is beautiful once it settles in, and it needs a large space, it gets tall and wide and has tons of blooms. Mine is fragrant also. For me it has always been one of those old reliable ones that always does its thing...
I guess I always called it Cleo, but that is the name the lady gave me whom I got it from. I should probably change the name to Miss Jessie on my tag.

I did a trade many years ago and was told mine was Cleo. Now I am anxious for it to bloom to see if it is fragrant. My Cleo may be Miss Jessie.

I can't either, they look almost identical. I think there is a difference in scape height though.

Yes, Cleo is registered as orange red light polychrome with spot or eye zone. 48" tall and mid-late season.
http://daylilydatabase.org/det...

Miss Jessie is registered as orchid mauve with medium light yellow bicolored. 40"tall and mid season blooming.
http://daylilydatabase.org/det... Jessie

I had a hard time deciding what color to call it and settled on rose, but sure could be orchid mauve and I also thought it had a hint of orange or rust. I'm not sure if most of mine blooming are mid or mid-late. Have a feeling a combination of both. I am going to ask Mark to check the height next time I see him. He just said it was tall. I agree most of the photos in the database look the same for both, but the AHS photos do look a little different in color.

The good news is that the winner would end up being the same person no matter which it is. I think if one person had said Cleo and one Miss Jessie I would have had to send them both a free daylily. I'm still not really sure which one it is.

Thanks Susan. Mine is definitely Miss Jessie because mine is no way orange, it is the orchid/mauve color.
