My daughter and I went to visit my parents when we got the hurricane warning. My husband stayed to take care of the chickens and dog. He was flooded in for 7 days and without power for 8 days. Most of our neighborhood flooded, but we were one of 4 houses that didn't flood. We got at least 2-3 feet of rain. I had some huge empty pots that were completely filled with water. The ground was so wet that two trees fell over, but neither one hit any buildings. One was inside the chicken run so the fence was down until we could get rid of the tree and fix the fence.

I am proud of how our city has responded to such a powerful storm. People of all faiths and cultures came together to help those in need. From rescuing people with their personal boats to clearing away debris/wet drywall, and donating food and cleaning supplies, the people of Houston are a beautiful example of taking care of others. We also appreciate the help of all the emergency responders, military, and garbage collectors that came from surrounding areas to help.

A volunteer has taken over the school garden and has hand weeded all the beds. We now have vegetables growing there that are donated to our food pantry. With the extra days we lost from the hurricane and snow days, I haven't been able to spend time on teaching as much gardening this year, but hopefully next year we will able to help plant, weed, grow things in the garden.
