Welcome! I think wherever you are you should not dig around it as that will damage the roots. Do you think it got too wet? Yellow leaves can indicate a number of things from normal aging to nutritional deficiencies to diseases and other problems. Usually yellowing of the oldest leaves is not particularly worrisome. If you could post a picture of the plant it would help greatly.

Some plants can get yellow leaves with too little water, I don't know whether that is typical of Rose of Sharon. Wilting of leaves and dropping of flower buds are other drought symptoms. Initially you were asking if you should dig around it to dry it out so it sounded like you'd had a lot of rain. We have the same drought problem here too Sad

There are a number of things that can cause yellowing. Part of diagnosing the problem is determining whether the whole leaf is yellow or whether the veins are still green, and whether it is the youngest leaves that are affected or the oldest. If you can answer those questions it would help in the absence of a photo. Mulch can sometimes stop water getting to the roots. It doesn't usually cause nitrogen deficiency when just applied to the surface.

I deal with higher temperatures than you would, but I have been growing Rose of Sharon's for almost 30 years. Although they can tolerate different conditions. I find they really like water, especially the double varieties. I have planted them fairly close to roof drip lines and near the water spigot so they would get hose run off. I think the sprinkling can may not be providing enough water to the deeper part of roots. Try doubling or tripling the water. Wait 15 to 20 minutes then water a second time, and another 15 minutes to water a third time. Then I would take regular miracle grow, mix at a light strength and pour that around the base of the plant. After they are 4 or 5 years old they are better about not dropping buds and leaves. You should be noticing transpiration on the Rose of Sharon leaves, if it needs water. If you are going through daily transpiration cycles. (Meaning the leaves droop alot during the day but perk up at night) The plant leaves will turn yellow and fall off. I would assume at 3 years your Rose of Sharon should be at least 4 ft?
