So I have been working on cataloging my plants. So far, this is what I have done!

That's fantastic! What do you use to put that together? Since you put this in C/S forum, I'm guessing that's the kind of plant you're mostly "into?"

I've done various things over the years to "keep track" of my plants but after discovering "my plant list" here on this site, it's become my primary facility for that. I can add notes, sort plants into various sub-lists, and indicate whether I actually have it, want it, if I want to trade it. It's so handy!

I also use Facebook albums to track the growth of some plants over time, or areas of my yard.

Looks good. More work than I'd want to do. Not sure I'd list "problems." Sounds so negative. I'd add some mention. of size, either the plant or pot. Would be interesting and educational to plot their growth over the years. I see you have some without ID. Post their pix here and maybe we can help with that. Gene

That is so awesome I will have to start one! (: I just used a template from microsoft word, I'm actually going to start my blog up again that I shut down over the school year. And yes, cacti and succulents are what I started out with. I'm currently propagating about 50 babies! But now I'm starting to get more into bonsais, air plants, carnivorous plants, and I love love love my dwarf citrus tree!

I know it is sort of negative to have problems hahaha. But for my sake I keep track so I know what not to do in the future! I do keep track of when they bloom though, that is my favorite part. And that is a great idea! I will have to keep track of growth. I know my aloe has quadrupled in size since I bought it!

That's a good point, Gene. Lindsey, are you doing this purely for your own use or do you plan to publish/share it?

A spreadsheet is so excellent for tracking bloom times. Plants down the side, months across the top.

I have just been doing it for my own use! And that is a great idea!!! I will definitely start a spread sheet.

Lindsey - Yes, I am encouraging you to create a spread sheet, a searchable database. I'm old = pencil and paper guy. I have an index card for every species I have. I have too many plants (just counted pots last week = 1850) to start now. And, the older I get the worse my typing gets. But, if I was a young buck, I'd have a searchable database. Include where you got the plant, what it cost, perhaps some notes on care. Gene

That's very professional. I love how you put that album all together. Can you edit it and add more information? I have taken pictures of every plant I buy. At the time it gets to my home. One year later, then every year I own it. That's a lot of pictures on my computer. I put them in folders of every plant category I have. I also use 'Paint' which came with my computer to add text to every picture. As to what it is, date, by whom given or purchased from. I also use 'Excel' spread sheet to list all my plants by; Name, when purchased, how much, by whom, and comments. About 25 % of my collection is from gifts from people here and another web site I'm on. Equally I give out as much as I have received. Pass the love around.

Love the compilation! For the love of the plants! I would add info where you grow it, is it indoors or outdoors always?
Though, there is one thing I try to avoid with succulents, growing them in glass containers, that set-up is just not for them.
I take lots and lots of photos of my plants from season to season, year to year...it helps me see improvements much better. Hope you can add that too on your plant diary, somewhere.

Tarev, Funny you should mention about glass containers. I use my old 55 gal. fish tank during the winter months for my Sanseviera collection. The small ones, mostly trifasciata hahnii types.

Oh Sanseveiras are different, they are actually the only ones that survived month long flooding in my old homeland, as long as temps are constantly warm they will thrive. But for the other succulents, it is dicey, eventually easy to succumb to root rot, due to poor drainage.

That looks great! I am doing something similar with my orchids. There are a couple things I would add:

- WHERE you got them along with the date.

- For plants that you have more than one, I would make an entry for each plant with photos of that plant.

- I would also add one higher classification, for instance, Haworthia are in the subfamily Asphodelaceae, as are Aloes and Gasteria.

- I would put fewer per page so you can go back and add photos of blooms and make notes on individual plants. I have one plant per page in my orchid journal.

- Group them by family and then by genus: All Stapeliae together then within that group, Stapelia, Huernia, Hoodia... (by the way, the little prickly sunburnt one might be Hoodia)

With time, you will see the relationships between plants and the characteristics common to families and genuses.

I have not had the best of luck either with glass containers! Those were older terrariums I had created, but they are empty now because my plants were not too fond of them! Hahah.

That is good to know LIndsey..sometimes we learn more as we grow them..and what to avoid next time

I have all my most delicate sans in the tank because of little to no water during the winter months. Moisture will kill most of my sans. I can keep the temp up a little more than the rest of the room and keep the watering down. Also by my easy chair that I sit and read from with help of the fish tank lights. Sans. trifasciata hahnii 'Gold Hahnii' is the most trouble some sans I own. Each plant is in it's own pot. Not planted up together.

That is the aspect I like with winter at times...a lot of the succulents are in rest mode..less watering..keeping them dry, of course bringing them indoors when it is already needed is such a chore!
