Thank you!!! Do you have an idea on what my pitcher plant could potentially be?

There is an app on Android called Nepy. It is used to identify nepenthes. I've heard it does very well at telling you the certain type. Smiling

So my Drosera is not producing as much dew. Any suggestions?

The Nep looks like it might be an alata cross - maybe N. ventrata x alata or N. Deroose alata.

Both are easy to grow. 3 or 4 hours of morning sun is sufficient. If you can provide filtered sunlight during midday, it will be even happier.

Thank you so much! So after time has passed, sadly my plant has lost all its pitchers. I know I need to increase its humidity. Any suggestions on how to do that? Thanks!

Hi Lindsey, in my area, what worked for me was to make the containers sit always in standing water, and I only use distilled water. It is so dry here, it was by accident that I found out it worked better that way. While I was away my hubby poured way too much water and made the plants sit in water. I noticed the improvement, pitchers staying on colors better. Before that the pitchers where just drying out way too fast.

And Nepenthes likes good direct sun at times, so it enjoys our west facing window. I have them by my kitchen sink so it gets extra humidity from there too.

Do you know your indoor humidity levels? It helps to have a weather station that will measure both your outdoor and indoor temps and humidity levels. That way you can adjust your growing conditions as you deem necessary.

Thank you Tarev!

I have it hanging in a window, so I will transplant it into a pot with a hole in the bottom and sit it in a dish of water to increase the humidity! I am not aware of our indoor humidity, I will have to find out. My pitcher plant has gotten huge since the last time I posted a picture, it just is not growing any pitchers!

I do hope we can have some other suggestions for you, especially those who grow them also on your specific zone. As I have said, what I did was appropriate for my very dry conditions here. Smiling

Thank you!! I just now transplanted it into a bigger pot and set it in a tray with stones and water so hopefully that will help increase the humidity!

One cause of no new pitchers on a Nep is not enough sunlight.

The setup looks good. It is best to water from the top - which ensures that the media is moist.

The plant looks good. It appears to be starting to grow the upper climbing vine. If so, it may be a while before it starts producing more pitchers. I have a N. x ventrata x alata that has grown about 2 feet this spring and is just now starting to show signs of new pitchers.

Perfect! Thank you everyone! I actually purchased some new carnivores today. (:

Bill, what exactly is the upper climbing vine? Will I need to add something to the pot for it to climb??

Many/all Neps are woody climbing vines. When they are young, you can generally just let them hang over the side of the pot.

Many people do not bother with a growing support. When the vine gets too long, they just cut it off in segments and use those to root new plants.

Another thing to note is that the upper pitchers may or may not be the same as the lower vine pitchers. I think Peter D'Amato talks about this in his book.

I bought 3 Venus Fly Traps at Walmart last month. I left them in their tiny pots for a week while I fed them a few flies I caught. They sent out more leaf traps.

So I did some research and found they wanted deeper pots of peat and sand. So I gave them that. And I found they wanted distilled water or direct rainwater (as in not off the roof) because they didn't want dissolved minerals in the water. Happily, Walmart sells the stuff for 82 cents per gallon.

Then I learned that "sand" didn't mean "sand". It meant quartzite sand, not beach sand because regular commercial sand has a lot of dissolved solids in it.

So I gently removed the plants from the "regular sand" contaminated mix and re-did it with peat and perlite.

The plants are now in 6" deep and wide pots of soil they want, in the direct sunlight they want, and are watered with distilled water or rainwater from clean buckets outside whenever it rains.

They are thrilled! They have doubled in size and number of leaf traps, the traps are pink inside, and half have insects they caught on their own.

One thing that confuses me is that the container they came in says they want temps between 50-80F and I KNOW it gets hotter than that in NC where they grow naturally in direct sunlight.

Am I missing something there?

Yardenman, I think your watering compensates even if temps soars a bit higher. Then you still cool down at night, so it helps your VFT's cope.
