Are Rose of Sharon plants,trees resistant to deer? We've moved into the country and I hope not to have my tree eaten by the herd of deer that come by in the evening. Thank You. Mary Hughes

Depends on what you mean by "resistant", and what you want the rose of sharon to look like.

In my area... deer love rose of sharon, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing...
Rose of sharon are such aggressive growers... that a little regular pruning by the deer may result in a pleasing shrubbery.

And... some areas have worse deer populations than others.

I'm in an area where they would eat one to the ground. If you don't have many, they could just do a bit of pruning for you. If it's small, you could fence it off til it got much larger, and then see how it goes.

We have two Rose of Sharon/Altheas at the lake house on Lake LBJ. They are trees that were planted in the 50s by the original owners. We have lots of deer up there. I have never seen the deer graze on them. They eat everything else, though!

The deer never bothered my Rose of Sharon either but that could mean two things:

1. They are browsers, not grazers so after every deer in the herd took a bite, there was still shrub left (mine were shrubs)

or

2. There was enough other better tasting stuff to eat (such as my Persimmon tree).
