Can I "adopt" Saintpaulia and Hoya and Episcia (if you create a page for them)?

I could do a page for begonias too...will/could it include all Begonias? The Rex types, Cane types,, etc?

You can adopt them, indeed. You can start by telling me now what you want the data fields to be that would apply to all plants in that type. (Sun: Full Sun, etc).

It depends. It's based on genus/species.

Light: moderate to bright indirect
early morning or late evening sun
excellent plant for artificial light

Temperature: 65 - 80 F

This will be like a "cover sheet" if I'm not mistaken, right? We can add in details in an article type fashion that will cover the needs of the plant?

I do hope someone will add an article to Clematis regarding the different pruning types. Smiling

I realize the moderators are not the picture police and some pictures are better than others but I do get concerned when I see a picture going into the database that I see as very confusing. Pictures go under each variety of whatever it is so should clearly show that plant. But if I see pictures with lots and lots of other plants in frame with the plant to be illustrated is not even front and center what am I to think?

In a case like that you can propose the image be deleted.

Or, you can leave a comment about the image, mentioning which plant is the one being featured. Then future visitors to the plant can read the comment.

I don't even grow the plant that made me comment. I had to look at the picture in question and think about it, after making the picture full size and guessing which one is the correct plant. I am not about to put in a public deleate this picture request. Not looking to make anyone feel bad on this site. I just think that in certain instances it might be better for the moderators to decline an image in the future if it is not going to work.

I agree, kind of. On the other hand it is very nice to see a plant and how it looks in a garden setting.

Maybe Dave could create some kind of gizmo that will allow us to circle the plant in question in the photo. Like Flickr does Big Grin

I like this idea a lot. But why stop with the DB? If there was a way to put a "gizmo" over a specific plant in a thread or DB photo which when scrolled over would have a plant name pop up - or could be linked to a question that would add another dimension to discussions. An ATPer could use it or not.

Sorry Dave. Big Grin

Hypothetically,
Lynn posts a photo of a pot with 5 different plants. I'm curious about that amazing Sedum snugged in behind the semps so I put a Gizmo on top of it and ask for more info.

Evan, you're stealing our thunder by giving away some of our future plans. You must be reading my mind! Hilarious!

But Rome wasn't built in a day and ATP won't be built in a month (or even a year). But we keep working, day after day and keep making it better. Thumbs up

Better and better it is Dave. Between checking, replying, ... I'm amazed at the constant flow of great tools popping up here. If ever a group deserved a "pat on the back" smiley, the ATP crew is it.

The gizmo-thingamajiggy sounds wonderful!

As for pics in the DB that are unclear, perhaps the person submitting it could be asked to crop it down to the intended plant (with an 'all the better to see you with' spirit). Seems a polite way to go about it.
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

I like seeing a plant in a garden, how it fits in so to speak. When I look up a plant, I don't want to see 5,000 close ups of the blossom. One will be the same as the next. I want to see the whole plant, and if I can see how it fits in with it's neighbors, so much the better. If one picture of a blossom is there, anyone should be able to identify that plant in a landscape shot. I think I added quite a few photos like that. Here's an example, A. tuberosa.
Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa)
I added a close up of a blossom, some healthy seed pods, one pod destroyed by milkweed bug as well as the bug itself, emergence in spring, but also 2 of them in garden beds. I think the A. Tuberosa is pretty obvious in the beds. Are you saying that I should crop out everything but the A. Tuberosa?

I think a variety of shots like that are valuable.

Karen
