Is yours like this?

Since you're looking for something compact, would you prefer recommendations for a point-and-shoot or a bridge camera?

I've currently got a Canon 7D, T1i, and an iPhone 6s+. I've always found glass to be the best place to invest in cameras, and each lens broadens the possibilities of what I can shoot, but I sense some hostility to lens discussion here.

The best camera is the one you have with you, though, and it's the photographer, not the camera, that makes the shot.
These were taken with an old point and shoot camera:

These, on the other hand, required the better glass:

What I'm looking for some day is mirrorless, with at least a full frame sensor, fast non-rolling shutter, and a price I can afford. Until that arrives, I'm doing okay with what I have.

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

Want to buy a new camera, unsure of what kind for an amateur . I have a old Fujifilm finepix s1000fd, don't have to change lenses. It is used only a couple of times a year at the Botanical garden or on vacation. My Samsung Galaxy tablet also takes great photos but not good distance shots, less hassle though. Looking forward to great photos next year on a 11 day land and sea Alaskan cruise.

Have you decided on a budget amount? Weight you'd like to carry around? Manhattan? Does that make you near B&H? Gene

Have not decided on the budget or which one yet. Looking at different brands. I do have some time before my trip. Looking for a light weight camera. If you are familiar with Manhattan, B&H is on 34th Street and 9th Ave. I live in Washington Heights right below the George Washington Bridge, about a 25 minute subway ride away. Best Buy is where I usually go to check out their electronics etc. but I think it is a good idea to visit B&H to see what they offer also. Thanks for the idea.

Very informative site. It will help me with my research. Checked to see what it says about the Fujifilm camera that I have. There is things on it that I never paid attention to or used. Thank you, Gene

Best Buy is pretty limited in what they carry. If they have what you want that is great, but don't let that be a criteria for making a choice.

Gee, almost everything is 20 minutes from where I live.

Yes, BestBuy is very limited. B&H is certainly the best that I know of since you're in NYC. Check their hours though! I think they are closed on Saturday...

There are other places to check out in the five boroughs. My list for a lightweight camera will grow larger as I do more research. Adding night time photos, I am always looking up.
