Howdy, Has Anyone in here grew daylilies from seeds. if so whats the best advice you would give someone attempting too?

Daylilies are relatively easy to grow from seed, but there are a few simple rules which will greatly increase your rate of success. Seed stratification is probably the most important step to understand. Rich Howard, proprietor of CT Daylily in Connecticut, sells seed from some very interesting crosses on the Lily Auction, and offers sprouting instructions on his "About Me" page there. He also makes reference to an AHS Society Article on seed germination that you may also find helpful if you want to dig deeper into the why's and wherefore's of the "art".

I only started 'collecting' Daylilies last year, so I'm still as green as can be
At the same time I also bought some (ahum! ) seeds on the Lily Action and grew out about 170


They survived the Winter and the first flowered last week!


I can tell you that when you start growing DL's from seeds, you'll get addicted very soon
and if you ever go to the Lily Auction to look for seeds..?

I found a mature seed pod this morning, it was on what I call my Big Yellow NOID, it was a normal looking seed pod but with one empty chamber...there were 18 seeds in that one pod! That is the most I have ever gotten and they were all beautiful black solid seeds.

@seedfork...the most I have gotten so far is 15 in a pod. I was thinking I would get an average of 5 seeds per pod (based on the few and late pods I had from last year)...I have waaaaay surpassed that!

In my limited experience, there are a lot more seeds in a diploid cross than there are in a tetraploid cross. The tets I've done have {maybe} averaged 5-6 seeds per pod. That's an average, mind you. The diploids do much better in the number of seeds.

I was thinking a dip pod also. I have many more seeds in diploid pods than I ever see in tet pods.

My dip cross gave one seed. I'm officially in the One Seed Club. I'm waiting for a big pod of a tet cross to ripen. 4 chambers. If I'll get one seed you will hear me laugh and cry from Italy.

Epic day today! I harvested one pod of a dip cross (stella de oro x nairobi dawn) and found 11 seeds! Two were to dry to be something alive so now I have 9 seeds. Still waiting for the big pumpkin pod.

I actually saw the opposite this year...although the number of diploid pods I had was far less than the tet pods. I had 5 pods that were Pandora's Box x Fancy Face and each had 4-5 seeds in them. On the other end, I have had 26 tet pods from various crosses with 10 or more seeds in them. I have three dip pods from a Stargate Portal x Fancy Face cross that I can't wait to open...I am really hoping that I get more than 5 seeds per pod on those

I have collected some of my Tet seed pods earlier with the most being about 10 seeds. Yesterday, I collected the NOID x Lee's Loss DIP seed pod and discovered 15 plump seeds. Air drying them right now and storage in the fridge later today for a couple weeks. Maybe I can get some of these to germinate next month so I can get them planted.
