They got into my actual yard last night. The carnage is unbelievable...maybe I'll go back to bed and try to erase this from my memory and wake up again, maybe it's just a really bad nightmare!

Before I moved to Corpus I lived in the country south of Bedias. The hogs were awful and caused so much destruction everywhere they foraged and wallowed. I think I'd call them an invasive species. Even worse were the darned raccoons that tore up everything once they figured out how to get in the garage. And I miss it a lot!!!

That's just awful! We just got back from visiting friends around Lake Nacogdoches. The deer were every where! I said how I would not like having to fight the deer for my plants. Wild hogs never entered my mind. I was born and raised in the country, but I've certainly become a city girl in my grown up years!

Well, I should be thinking about the plants I've still got, not the ones that I couldn't save. It does seem unfair about the vines I had caged because of the armadillos, though! That cage wasn't done very well, so even though it kept the armadillos out, it didn't stop the hogs. Still have one moonflower vine left in there and a few more elsewhere that they somehow missed! I'm going to have to be more careful...I forgot to close something up yesterday evening.

Feral hogs are a big problem in many rural areas. The breed quickly, have few to no predators, and are insanely destructive. Not to mention those suckers can be mean - especially a mama sow with piglets!

Yes, they are mean! A former co-worker told us the story of how her husband had to spend the night in a tree to avoid being injured by them. He had a gun, but one against many of them wasn't going to be enough. That was a real life case of the hunted turning on the hunter!

Over in Germany a group of us were walking on a path at night, it was surrounded by high chain link fences on both sides. We heard what sounded like a bunch of people running our way, it got louder and louder we finally saw a group of the pigs running our way, we climbed the chain link fence and let them pass, kind of eerie.

The hogs have hit residential areas in our neighborhood, and in neighborhoods near us. But not this year so far.
They have helicopters in rural areas that take up private hunters to kill the hogs. The meat is then made into sausage and given to local food pantries.
A friend's neighbor killed a young hog on his property dressed it and cooked it. My friend said strangely enough it didn't have any pork flavor. But it was good and tender.

@LindaTX8 .I'm so sorry. We've had the same thing happen. We didn't know about them when we moved to rural NM. They dug up and ate nearly everything I had planted in the first few weeks. Fortunately ours aren't around all year. They seem to come by in packs once or twice a year. Are yours around full time?

Just about! They come down the creek at night and since the creek crosses the corner of our place, it happens frequently. Also, I put out water and some food for wildlife during the day, which, I admit, might draw them in, although the wildlife food they could reach is often gone by nighttime. How bad it gets depends on the season and conditions at the time. They like acorns, so acorn season is always a big foraging time for them. Other than that, they eat worms and other small critters down in the soil, roots, tubers, fruit, corn and certain other crops, I think. During dry times, they're looking for water especially. After rainy times (like earlier this year and parts of last year), they reproduce at an astronomical rate, then later, they get especially desperate for food. Normally, the fences keeps them out and I go out waving a flashlight occasionally just to remind the snarling beasts at night that we're here. This is the first time that I know about that they've actually come inside the yard because I got careless. But they've always rooted around on parts of my two acres outside the fenced yard, leaving a mess, but strangely enough...mostly kill plants by uprooting them or trampling them...they dig in certain areas. Farmers and ranchers hate them, of course! Hunting of wild hogs is highly encouraged in Texas!

That's a great article, they have pamphlets about the feral hog diseases at the drs office and the vets
We live in Hays county and moving close to Caldwell . There are people without fences here that have had their property torn up
I was going on the 130 toll from Hays county to Georgetown several years ago and had to drive off the road into the median because it was night, came over a hump/hill in the road and hogs were all across the lanes. They have had a few accidents because of the hogs
Thank God it was late and there weren't any cars around me that night. I shook for a long time after

Linda, if you want, let me know what you lost and I might have it to replace, Smiling

I've got to get my fence fixed. They've damaged a part of it near a gate trying to get in. It wasn't done well in the first place, otherwise they wouldn't try it there. In the meanwhile, I'll hold off planting anything more, just in case. There's just too dang many of them this year!

Same problem kinda comes with living in the National Forest, fences will help but a 44mag and a good skinning knife works well too. I tip my hat to you.
