It has earned the following AHS awards: Stout Silver Medal: 2010, Award of Merit: 2007, Honorable Mention: 2004, and JC: 1999. Daylily (Hemerocallis 'J.T. Davis')

Beautiful but fairly short. Pretty much took this year off, as did a number of other cultivars.

I selected this plant because of all its medals and the accolades it has received in popular votes.

Let me tell you, they are deserved.

Here in the subtropics it flowers in the second month of spring. It is a bloom machine and reblooms to autumn. It is an easy parent and fertile both ways. It is fragrant, a good-looker and rust resistant. Go get.

Hardy in zone 4. Reblooms if provided with high nitrogen fertilizer in my conditions. I will try to get budcounts and scape heights later today. Increases reasonably here. Does not always open well.

Edited: scape heights between 21 and 22 inches. Budccounts 8, 9, 9, 11, 11, 11, 19.

I've had J. T. Davis only a couple of years but it is fast becoming one of my very favorites in my zone 8b garden. The bloom is absolutely stunning and I have not had any trouble setting any seed pods on it. It holds up well in this summer heat and humidity as well. Definitely one to add to your collection if you don't have it!!!

J. T. Davis has been a great addition to my garden. It blooms great and even though we had a late freeze this year it bloomed for several weeks.

My pot has been languishing in shade for some years, so I can't really make any fair judgement about performance.

Fwiw, some things that I have noticed:

The flower is indeed beautiful and opens well here. (I have seen so few of them, though, that I can't remember if they are EMO or CMO.)

The scape was weak and leaning. (That may or may not have had to do with the shade that it is grown in.)

Last winter, when several daylilies around it had frank rust, this daylily did not. However, the foliage did look somewhat sickly then, in the sense that it was green with suspiciously sickly yellow looking blotchy areas. I kept wondering if it was going to break out in pustules (I am now somewhat skeptical about rust "resistance" unless I see it for myself, having been burned), but it never did. Maybe it really is rust resistant... or tolerant... or something...

And maybe now (with the deer fenced out) I can finally move it out of the shade... or at least, into lighter shade...

It has beautiful bloom but is short and often under performs for me in zone 6

Polymerous - Thrip damage can have yellow blotches on the leaves. I have many rust resistant cultivars and they are resistant to rust, but not thrip damage, so I've come to the conclusion that they are truly rust resistant. Thank you for your evaluation on this cultivar being grown in shade and being rust resistant. Very helpful!

Thrips, you say? I do have thrips, but for some reason I thought that they only bothered the buds and flowers...

So, what's an organic control for thrips? Apart from my personal gardening philosophy, my dog gets into everything here, and I don't want him exposed to pesticides.

I have thrips and they sometimes affect the blooms. Mostly though, they make the leaves on the fans ugly!!! I don't know what is worse .... rust or thrips or leaf streak. (This year, rust seems to be the least of my garden problems as thrips and leaf streak seem to be the main issues!) They all make the foliage very unsightly. I use insectical soap that has Spinosad in it to treat thrips.
