We have had a wetter than normal spring/summer and it is now August and the leaves are turning black on the north most bushes. I think the bushes are about 25 yrs old

Hi Jason,

to NGA,

Your plants have powdery mildew. Its caused by the wet weather - not much you can do. Maybe spray them with a fungacide.

caraganas are prone to powdery mildew as Daisy noted but since your leaves are turning black I'm wondering if they have sooty mold, especially since it has been wet (powdery mildew likes dry weather).. Is there a tree overhanging these plants and which might have a insect pests such as aphids?
