Greetings to all,

Being brand new to vegetable gardening I am experiencing a very steep learning curve. This year's effort was terribly disappointing. I am, nevertheless, determined to acquire the skills necessary to grow a bounty of veggies for the sustenance of my family.

The ability to grow food is, I surmise, a fundamentally beneficial enterprise, and it is no less than an incredible state of affairs in which we find a dearth of these essential skills in today's society.

Having failed in my spring/summer efforts I am now focused on planting a winter garden. Arriving here, at your NGA site seeking answers I found only western winter garden references. Would you all happen to have any recommendations relevant to a South Carolina winter plot?

I am pretty new at veggie gardening as well, but I'm planning broccoli, cauliflower, parsnips, & lettuce for this Fall. There is a vegetable & fruit gardening forum on NGA with tons of information, fyi, if you haven't found it already. Do you know your growing zone? That might help people make better recommendations for you. I'm on the border of 7b/8a, so I can grow some things almost year round.

In South Carolina, you should be able to grow about anything that I can grow...

Of special concern is soil type, rainfall frequency, critters...

Would have helped if you had mentioned specifically what happened with your summer garden.

Anyway, try collards, carrots, rutabagas and turnips.

Try fava beans and sugar snap snow peas.

If you are planting now, try some Irish taters for a fall crop, plus there is still time to plant beans and cow peas for an autumn harvest or three.

There is also a planting calendar here on NGA that you can narrow down to your zip code; the calendar has both Spring and Autumn planting dates. Look on the left of the screen where it says Web Apps; click that and look for calendar.
