That is an unusual plant you have there. Could you tell us where you are located? That might help to narrow down what species this is. You can update your profile by clicking the "head and shoulders" icon at the top of the left menu bar.

This was grown from seed (added a picture of them), a friend of mine recieved them from his friend so I don't know what species or location it grows.

It looks like a stretched safflower:
