I have noticed these spiky things that seem to be growing out of the leaves on a maple tree. I got in touch with someone in pest control, he told me that it is a type of beetle egg and the type of beetles that hatch eat and destroy wood and that the bugs will end up eating my wood house! I've been doing tons of research and have yet to find anything relatively close to what my exterminator says, so I'm not sure what I should do, I figured maybe you can help me with some answers!?! TIA

Welcome! They are leaf galls, see:

If it's maple spindle gall it is caused by a mite. Definitely won't eat your house!

It sounds like that exterminator is drumming up business for himself.

Hi, Jen! Welcome to NGA.

Speaking of "gall", that exterminator has plenty already. By any chance do you live on Cape Cod? We used to call them "Cape Cod Craftsmen", since that sounds better than "lazy, lying #$##^###!!! liars" .

Or maybe he just doesn't know the difference between a leaf and a bug, or a mite and a termite.
Maybe he thinks a "ter-mite" is one kind of mite!

I'm going to put my bet down on "lying #$##^###!!! liar" !

Good luck with your maple tree!

"Maple leaf galls seldom, if ever, cause permanent injury to a tree, but they do detract from the beauty of the leaves."
