That's exactly when i harvest mine (essentially the same zone).

Welcome to NGA, @Vernonia -- it would be helpful if we knew where you are located, when to plant and when to harvest garlic depends on your climate. However, I go by the rule that there need to be at least 3 green leaves left on the garlic plant as it starts dying back, because each leaf represents one layer of "wrapper" around the garlic bulb. (when I first tried growing garlic I thought I could let the tops completely die back, like onions; all I can say is, don't do that; all that will be left is a bunch of loose garlic cloves underground, pretty darned difficult to harvest!)

I never knew that about the 3 leaves, makes sense, since I have a limited amount of ground, I'm shot out of the water because of waiting 4 years between replanting in the same spot. Has anyone tried container growing of garlic?

RJ, Ken Ramsey (DrDawg) has grown garlic in containers; he has written several articles about garlic growing that are found in the "community ideas" section. A listing of the garlic articles can be found here: http://garden.org/ideas/search...
