This is a photo from yesterday afternoon; lighting isn't very good but this Pileated Woodpecker was up in a pine tree in the backyard for a long time, making quiet calls. I was wondering if perhaps it was a youngster because the Pileated WP's are usually quite loud!

I accidentally fed the parents and babies this morning and the White Ibis thugs came in. I had forgotten how the ibis are cued into the feeding calls of the stone-curlews parents to the bubs. It was very difficult keeping them at bay because they have no fear of humans and they go for the bubs. I fell over chasing them which was not the best.
I will only put food out for them at night now.

One of my favourite small Australian birds is the Willy wagtail.Very cheeky buggers and friendly, often nesting in farm sheds,garages or trees.The nest is a minor miracle, woven so perfectly.If nature is kind to me, they choose to nest in one of my garages.Unfortunately that thug, the introduced blackbird attacks their nest, devouring any eggs or chicks and this has happened in the last two years.
The wagtails are about again, thinking of a nest site, hope they are successful this year.

The nest is absolutely beautiful, and what a very cute bird too! I hear they sing nicely as well?

I wonder if you could "camouflage" the nest by draping some branches or vines around it to help protect it from the blackbirds? That one in the rafters in your picture sure does look very exposed.

I remember hearing about Willy Wagtail's from a lady on another site I used to visit. They are such neat looking birds and they sure weave perfect nests! It's such a shame about the Blackbirds preying on their eggs and chicks.

Those nests are a work of art! So sad the blackbirds do such damage.

How lovely and sweet Willy Wagtails are, Paul. I have one that shows up here now and again but not often. I saw my first Channel-billed Cuckoo today for the migratory season. Needless to say I didn't have my camera with me. Also the Dollar Birds have arrived back from the Orient.
