Not All Morning Glories Are Thugs; Some Are Very Friendly!

Many gardeners hate morning glories, thinking they are invasive and can take over the garden, especially purpureas. They can be troublesome if not controlled, but it's easy to keep them from getting out of control.

Thanks for a wonderful article. I love morning glories and have been collecting several different varieties over the years. I think many people are turned against them because some do tend to reseed, but as you pointed out, the annual morning glories are very easily removed even as large seedlings. It's the perennial members of the family (bindweed) that are the problem. In fact, one elderly woman I know is convinced that bindweed comes from annual morning glories. She warned me that planting morning glories would "lead to" bindweed...apparently there's a long-standing myth out there that they "evolve" into bindweed...which is patently untrue.

I couldn't agree more Annie, so many myths and misinformation about them.

I get that same nonsense from my neighbors. Can't get it through their heads that morning glories and bindweed are different plants. Sighing!

My son wants to grow morning glories, but I haven't let him because I was taught this myth that the bindweed were morning glories that reverted back to being wild. Thank you, for this new information. I will try some next year. What lovely varieties, my favorite is that top picture with the variegated blue.

In addition to blue, I've got pale rose pink, a very deep magenta color, and a stunning royal purple! I have seeds to share if anyone would like a few for next year.
