We found these in the grass near the street.

Does it grow in dry conditions?

It grows were there is a lot of water in the soil. The edge of lawns are always the wettest part. I don't know if that's it but its close.

Look at slime molds.

It must be moister there than we thought. This grass hardly ever gets watered and it's only a couple of inches from the curb and street which gets very hot.

Anyway, they've been removed.
