I am still discovering new things here. I saw this tree the other day while out cutting brush. It has very pretty lime green leaves that are quite big and remind me of a maple. What I think is unique are the skirts of leaflets along each branch. The bark is smooth and slippery on the shoots that have grown out of the old trunk that is left after the tree was raized. It is also quite large, about 2' across. Any ideas? Thanks!

Sycamore! They are great trees that look like bushes early on, but will get very big! Eventually the bark will start looking like it's shedding, kind a patch work effect. Yours looks very healthy!!

It sure looks like a Maple of some sort to me! Can you get a photo of the bark? Are the undersides of the leaves soft and pubescent? There are a few Maples found in Georgia:
Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum)
Chalk Maple (Acer leucoderme) (which I just submitted data info for but it hasn't been approved yet)
Florida Maple (Acer barbatum)

Thank you! I will walk out there now and get a picture. I have two other kinds of maples (I love sugar maples) but this is my first sycamore. I am shocked at how big the trunk was when it was cut down. I am looking to the National Arbor Day for pruning help since they are ALL side shoots. Need to figure out the leader unless this species is not viable since the original Tree was raized. Anyone have any info? I have had limited success with the ADF b4.

I love sycamore! My father in law used to sing a song related to "sittin' in the shade of a sycamore tree". Maybe he just made it up, but it always sounded neat.

Steve- as the sycamore gets older, it will become more apparent which is the main trunk, then you can prune it. I think, give it another year or two and it will show you. It does not matter that the original tree was removed, this new tree has its own root system to be that full.

Alyssa, you are very welcome! I should have recognized that tree ... my mother in law had some huge, gorgeous Sycamore's in her yard many years ago and a neighbor at our old neighborhood had three lovely trees growing in their backyard. I love Sycamores!

Unfortunately I think I see why this tree was originally cut down. It is very close to the power/utility lines that run overhead - which concerns me about its future.

Well. If it were me, then I would dig it up and move it somewhere more convenient before it gets any bigger. How tall is it? (about- it's hard to tell if not there in person).

Lin- I think there was a virus quite a few years ago that wiped out a lot of sycamore trees and they are now making a comeback!

It's huge. To make matters worse, it sits between a power pole and on a steep stream embankment. Trust me, I immediately thought about moving it before I considered the logistics. What I might do is just let it grow and see what happens. I may even get a seed from it to start a new one on my own. I fell in love with the tree when I first came up on it, so we'll see where this goes. Thank you!

Sycamores are one of my all time favorite trees. Aside from just being beautiful, stately trees, the have a scent that I just love.
