It sure looks like a Maple of some sort to me! Can you get a photo of the bark? Are the undersides of the leaves soft and pubescent? There are a few Maples found in Georgia:
Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum)
Chalk Maple (Acer leucoderme) (which I just submitted data info for but it hasn't been approved yet)
Florida Maple (Acer barbatum)
