Any ideas on what type of begonia? Growing near Samana, Dominican Republic, in part sun to mostly shade. Very large leaves! Rhizomatous type, blotched reddish leaf undersides, reddish new growth, probably at least about 2 1/2 feet tall or so. I didn't see flowers so not sure what they look like. Please forgive the trash - at least it gives an idea of scale. Thanks!

Perhaps you could share the photos with the Houston branch of the American Begonia Society. Someone there might have an idea on the ID.

Very interesting stems. I have no clue which it is but the leaves remind me a bit of Begonia remiformis: https://www.google.com/search?...

Thanks, Alice, that's a good idea - hadn't thought of that!

Lin, ya, it's kinda similar, but I don't think that's quite right. B. reniformis doesn't seem to have the stature this one did, it was BIG!! Plus reniformis looks to be a cane type and this one was definitely rhizomatous. Thanks, tho.

Without flowers it is very hard to be positive.
Might it be Begonia popenoei..big leaved Begonia....also called simply the White Begonia.?

"Begonia popenoei is a rhizomatous begonia with large, rounded, mid-green leaves."

I thought about popenoei but didn't think the leaves in Carter's pictures are as round as popenoei's usually are. The new leaf in the 4th photo clearly shows a more distinct shape. There are always variations though, so maybe.......

That's the only one I thought too, popenoei but the leaves, as Alice said, didn't seem right. Too many notches.

Yes, this one's leaves were definitely not rounded. Large leaves, tho - maybe 8"-10" or so, possibly a little larger.

Looks very much like my B. 'Caribbean Queen' however I my stems have a fine reddish hairs on them. This was given to me by a gardener down in the FL Keys this past May, so mine hasn't flowered yet, but one stem grew into this in six months, the largest leaves are 12-14 inches wide.
