I'm often surprised to see beds of impatiens here growing in sunnier spots than I would have formerly thought possible. I think some things we consider shade plants such as impatiens, hosta, and tuberous begonia can take quite a lot of good morning and late afternoon sun if kept well watered.

>> My roses were very sad this year

My Zinnias kept waiting for the summer to warm up ...
My Petunias never emerged in the germinating trays ...
My Water Spinach dried out ...
My Daikon Radishes were about 2" ...
Even my Bok Choy were feeble this year!

Is there a "Garden Whining" thread I should be posting to?

On the other hand, Lavaterra, Salvia, Snapdragons and Tomatoes did better than I expected.

A lot of my stuff was sad this year due to excessive wet, record rainfall. Tomatoes were the worst. We've been growing them for 25 years or more and this was the worst year ever.

Rick, I agree that shade plants can be grown in sun in some circumstances- plenty of supplemental water especially. Zone is probably the biggest variable- shade plants might do well in Canadian sun but Florida sun would be a whole different ball of wax.

Rick, just follow me from forum to forum. I whined all summer on all forums. And just wait until the snow flies, then I'll show you whining. Hilarious!

Oy!! We can whine a duet.

Late, cold wet spring.
Cool to cold summer.

If this is global warming, I'll try something from Column B.

(Actually, I know we're seeing 'changes' more than gross warming.)

And I can't complain about tomatoes because this was my first year even trying. I brought 4 1-quart plants hoime from the nirsery before ngihts were over 50, and the owner looked at me like "YOU'RE an optimist!"

I expected those plants to laugh at me and stay green all summer. Instead they just laid there for 2 months doing nothing, then shot vines all over the yard, and then some actually RIPENED despite my expectaations.

Sungold, pretty good.
Stupice, not much yield but they ripened.
Supersweet 100 never got past the "just laid there" phazse and ripened maybe 3 ping-pong balls before it disapeared under the Sungold Tidal wave.

Next year, Sungold, Stupice, Glacier, Oregon Spring, Manitoba and maybe Matina. From seed, yet! (Maybe strat out under plastic to beat the long, slow, cold wet spring.

What should I whine about when they grow despite my darkest expectations?

"Tomatoes give me heartburn!"

Dave I have a duplicate in the Sedum database. It is Sedum 'Tricolor'. When I try to move the photos into the Sedum 'Tri-Color' it doesn't come up with the entry in order to move it.

I think the search engine has problems with hyphens, Lynn. Try typing in Sedum Tri Color without the hyphen. You'll probably get the entry that way.

The - tells the search engine to ignore what comes after the minus. It's one of those features...
