This is my first living wall...... I wanted to share with everyone. My husband built this for me for Mother's Day. Any helpful tips from those of you who are experienced with this project. Send them my way!!!

Sandi you have a very handy husband. That is a great wall box. The only thing I would suggest is to put a layer of moss over the top of the soil to keep the soil from washing out when hung. Does the unit fill from the top? If so at this point it would be easy to remove the top and add a layer of moss, then start planting.
I can't wait to see it all finished. That is going to be one impressive living wall. Lovey dubby

I actually place moss over the soil but ended up placing a tiny bit more soil over the moss. The soil settled some!! I can put more moss over the soil again!! Smiling

Great idea Sandi. When do you think you'll be finished planting it? I can't wait to see photos once it's done. Lovey dubby

I found it takes quite a while for the roots to hold the soil in place. By the end of the summer you'll be able to hang it up. I didn't have too much success with overwintering mine, but if you put it in the corner and put leaves over it it should be fine. Depends on your winter situation.

Here's what my poor mosaic looks like - I took the wire off it, and I'll just replant more chicks as they come available.

Somehow I missed this thread. Sandi, that is indeed going to be really nice.

Jacki, what a shame your mosaic took such a beating over the winter. Did you leave it hanging up?

No, it was on a low table. I guess that was a mistake. Oh, well, I probably would have had to renovate it anyway. The soil is only about 1" deep, so I'll have to give it some fertilizer. I took the chicken wire off it, so the crowns won't get strangled as badly.

That's a good thing to keep in mind about chicken wire (the strangulation). I've noticed too that for some reason, pots, wreaths, etc. seem to overwinter fine if they're on the ground but not up in the air. Guess too much cold air envelopes them then.

I think I have my Spousal Unit thinking I "need" to have one of these...........we saw some at the Biltmore Estate gardens when we were there last month..........the dimensions were 6x6x6..........6 feet tall and wide and 6 inches deep. In fact, we (he) went back and looked again and talked to the guy that was working on one putting finishing touches on it. I'm not going to argue............. Big Grin

LOLOL..............oh, not this summer anymore. I knew that going in. Big Grin He needs all winter to think about it and fabricate. And find some DECENT chicken wire to put on the front side so the moss doesn't fall out.

I would like to figure out what the parks dept has used as a planter here: It looked like a 2" square grid...almost like a bunch of 4-packs on their sides.

Thumb of 2011-07-11/JuneBug/376b68

It was across a small river and we didn't have time to get closer :-/

Now that is a wall June. Will you be going by there again? Could you take close up photos of the front and sides? Boy would I love to see how that is done.

We will be going again and will not be part of a tour group so we will be able to spend some time there. The problem is that it is monsoon season and it probably will be too uncomfortable to go there before fall. Hopefully when we go the river will not be so high and we will be able to cross on the rocks.
This looks like flats made with cells, held together with zip ties and somehow fixed to a 2x4 frame. There is a grid-like pattern over the dirt that looks like ½ hardware cloth or bird-netting. Now that it is on my computer; I can zoom in and see it better than I could in person☺

Could you crop a section of the photo and re-post it June, so we can see it up closer. It is very interesting.
