This old yellow Iris has been blooming off and on since May. We are to get colder temperatures very soon so I cut most of the flowers and buds and brought them in to enjoy. This is the longest this plant has ever bloomed. Poor thing is so confused because of our crazy weather.



just had to share it with you all. The fragrance of these blooms is very strong. In fact, stronger than I can remember it ever being. You would think it would run out of something soon.

Wow! Any idea who it might be? I didn't know iris rebloomed that far north.

It depends on the cultivar & the season.

Unfortunately, my plants are at the edge of my daffodil field and all the identification tags got lost in the last two storms we had. I do know this old yellow is a baby of a hand me down that is ages old. On another site, we were discussing this same topic and it seems that there are some whites and yellows that are newer varieties that are also blooming up this way again.

I am sure with some research you could find some if you were interested. I am sorry I am not much help.

I am wondering why none of my iris get seed pods. I read other people are getting seed pods on their iris and I have none. Can anyone answer that question?

If your irises are tall bearded the flower parts have become so wide that it is difficult for a bee to brush the correct flower parts. the older & smaller irises present no difficulty.

Iris do sometimes form bee pods but it is erratic. I don't get any but make my own crosses and like to know the parentage. I think some of the smaller bearded iris make bee pods more often because the bees have an easier time in smaller flowers. If you want seed make your own crosses next year. Its fun for some of us. I love your rebloomer. We don't get much rebloom here but I've never made a real effort to encourage it. Lucy is our " go to expert" on these things.

I am basically a tropical houseplant person but my sideline are the "field" flowers because I do not have time to have the kind of garden I had as a younger person. My largest collection is the daffodil field. I even sell them cut, wholesale, to a farm market. I started with a few hundred bulbs, now I have no clue how many I have. They just do their thing. The Iris basically started because people gave me clumps and they keep the weeds down near the black pussy willows. I just kept adding to the field bed and they love it. I leave them alone and they give me such pleasure for their freedom. I enjoy cutting them for my personal use. The Siberian last longer as cut flowers than the big old bearded, but I love their fragrance even it they have a short life in a vase. Sorry I am rambling. At 83 that happens sometimes.

I love listening to people "ramble" about their flowers. You just keep on rambling, JB, because I'm picturing your beautiful daffodils and iris as I read your post. Sounds so lovely.
I try to get 50 new named daffs and 100 new iris each year, and if I can keep doing that until I'm 80, maybe I'll have a place like yours! Assuming we can hang on to this place that long...
Do you have any iris pallida? They smell like grape soda...and they spread fast. Even with their plain appearance, they are my favorite for cutting, just for the scent. I send whole plants home with neighborhood children, and now they're all over the last 4 neighborhoods I've lived in.

Iris pallida is my favorite, too, Cindi, and if you can believe it, the green leaf variety is getting hard to find.

So, you're into daffs, too. I'm just starting with named ones this year. I mean I have named ones from before, but never kept track, and now I'm keeping track. I started with 3 each of 40 kinds this year.

Jacquie, any chance you can show us pictures of your daffodil fields? I bet they are absolutely gorgeous.

good for you cindi. Nothing like getting people into iris when they aren't looking. Our daffs grow in front of a stone wall along the road. they were a collection, not named ones.

We have a local daffodil club with people who order from Mitsch, B & B, Ringdaddy? Scamp?? sellers from Ireland--so we get really nice newer bulbs. Our show attracts people from several states away.
Last year I bought all the sale leftovers at half price. I didn't realize how many they had left over...must have bought 200 different ones. My knee was torn up and my husband had to help me plant them and of course I didn't get to it until December when it was cold. I did get nice yellow labels made for every one of them, and every single one bloomed and was named correctly. I ended up having knee surgery the week before the show, so I didn't get to take any in.
The day of the yearly sale, my daughter was home for the first time since Christmas, so I totally forgot about the sale. I'll have to remind my husband that I'm NOT making him dig holes this year.
Didn't put in any big lilium orders this year, either. Just roses and iris, since those performed the best in the heat.

I like lillies, but the problems with the lily leaf beetle make it too difficult. I have other bugs to chase, like iris borer.

knock on wood, no iris borers or beetles here so far.
I know they're in this area, just not on my property yet.
Rose Rosette Disease is really the only true menace to my plants. Even the deer feed on elderberry at the edge of the property and leave the daylilies alone. I planted hostas under a prolific apple tree, which was like baiting the deer, but they've stayed away from that part too.
No slugs, moles, voles, mice. I think the cats, dogs, hawks, owls and coyotes provide a good natural control. Lots and lots of bees, butterflies, frogs, toads, rabbits and snakes. So many rabbits that my flower beds look like I poured bags of alfalfa pellets on them, but it's rabbit poop. My dogs keep them chased away in the daytime, but the dogs stay inside at night. It's the climate that drives me nuts. Someday I'll learn not to fret over the stuff I can't control...

Polly, I am not ignoring you. I had completely misplaced this thread. I could not remember where it was that someone ask me for pictures of the daffys. Sorry. in my search, and I am so sorry I am having a difficult time finding a picture of the entire garden in bloom...I seldom take pictures of it during the season because we are so busy at that time of year it is not on my mind. I will keep looking. In the meantime, I can show you a poster I made back in 2007 when I was selling them wholesale to flower shops. That was a real pain in the butt so that only lasted one year. Now I sell them by the bunch wholesale but they do not get a choice of blooms. They just get a mix. These were all perfect blooms with long stems. Really took too much time for the money. They had to be fresh daily, too.

I found one of the daffodil field. This was in April, just as they were beginning, I have them going until June. The different kinds have their own times to bloom. I have one that blooms in the summer. I do not think it survived the blizzard this past winter because I did not see any this August. I will post it as soon as I find it again.

Isn't it nice to grow something deer or voles don't eat?

OK, this is the last one I will bother you with, but these are so fragrant and gorgeous I cut a small bunch just to take the picture. They were great for two years but last year must have done them in. I only had about 100 of them and they were such a pleasure to see them in August. But, they must have frozen during this past winter. I am lucky I had any left after that blizzard and a month of below freezing temps.

Lucy, We have just completed fencing in the entire back side of the farm with a chain link fence to keep the neighbors dogs and kids out of the garden and fields. We have a Christmas Tree Farm and we do spray those trees frequently. No place for kids to play or dogs to dig. Most of the neighbors are far enough away with the exception of one. Thank God they moved.
Anyhow, voles are not a problem here. They were at my other farm but that was in the woods. I had a Jack Russell that I could take out and we hunted them, he would hear them, dig and grab them. It was really better than any trap I ever tried. They made me crazy when we had them. But, this property is much better soil and they so not seem to like it. Deer just leap over the fence and make all sorts of mess in the veggie garden, which is now history since the past hurricane Irene. She took it all but the peppers.
