Glen, great shots; I love the face on that Masked Lapwing! It's so sad about them being hit by cars. I saw a Sandhill Crane walking on a busy road here a few days ago and was so worried that it was going to get hit.

So wonderful to see the little plovers - they really do stride with those long legs, don't they! I'd say they've done well to keep 3 out of 4 babies coming along. Life's dangerous for a baby bird.

I was out in the yard with the dogs a few minutes ago and I'd left my camera on the bench from earlier so I was able to grab it and get a couple pic's of a Red-shouldered Hawk. Lighting isn't the best due to the time of day and clouds ...

Don't leave us hanging, Betsy! Beautiful shots there, Lin. I always like taking pictures in lower light, myself.
There must be a hawk around here lately too, because my birdies sure are skittish. I'll have to get out there with my little toy pellet gun and chase him off again.

We stopped at the grocery store last Friday evening and came upon a scene from "the birds". As we parked I noticed black birds (crows?)sitting on wires and on store roof line- I mean lots and lots of them. I stayed in the car, while DH ran in. Then more birds flew in and landed on the parking lot and on the cars, including ours.
It was a sight! Never seen such a thing! DH got back and drove off-
Thank goodness there was no attack of "The Birds".
I would still brave a gauntlet of crows to get to that Starbucks.
FYI, a bird is attacking my side mirror again. I haven't seen who, but my bet is the Cardinal. But I thought they were only supposed to do that in the spring? Is this another weird Florida thing? Because I can accept that.

Melanie, have you got a stretchy hat you can put over the mirror? It would be easy to snatch it of when you're going out driving, but will keep the bird and the car from damage, maybe.

We have lots of Red-shouldered Hawks around our neighborhood which abuts a preserve area. This morning another hawk flew to a pine tree and posed for a few pic's.

I saw a red tailed hawk yesterday and I've been hearing the hawk's call more frequently in the last couple of weeks. Yesterday there was a big ta-do happening between the crows and a couple of hawks. It seems the crow population has grown a little bit, they sure were loud. I could see them chasing two hawks around and through the trees. Must be a territorial thing.

Well, the Cardinal isn't actually causing permanent damage. It's just messy. And I was a little mad because my brother washed my car right before I went to Naples. Then, I come out to leave the next morning and there's bird poo all over it. I don't know what that silly thing is thinking. I will never understand birds.

I'm sure he's thinking there's another male cardinal in his territory. As long as you park where you are, he's going to defend his territory. Maybe park a bit further out of the driveway? Even 10ft. or so might help.

We have a three car garage and four vehicles at my house. We all park outside in the driveway. I'll have to watch and see if I'm blaming the right bird. I've been too tired to go outside much lately. I've seen the Cardinal around the bird feeder, but I think the juvenile one must have moved on. It's just been Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal lately.
Lin - The red-shouldered hawk may be the one near me. They cover a large area for hunting and they know to watch the bird feeders. They've gotten doves from my feeder numerous times!

Becky, I think you live just a couple of blocks over from me so yes, I'm sure it's probably the Red-shouldered Hawks you are seeing too. We used to get a lot of them at our house in Daytona Beach but there seem to be a lot more of them here, probably because of the preserve being next door and so many trees and they seem to find the neighborhoods where the songbirds are being fed ... it makes for easy meals.

I do feel badly to be offering a meal to the hawks at my feeders. I haven't seen a pile of feathers in some time though, so maybe there haven't been any attacks in my yard for some time. Though in saying that now, it will probably happen tomorrow.
