Hmm...the ones in Texas seem to have more contrast. The paler band on the upper wing looks more white whereas in Florida, it looks more like a pale yellow to me. Must be a regional thing. Neat!

Please post a picture of your Florida Crescents, Melanie. I'm curious. The Phaons aren't as prevalent here as the Texan Crescents, but I do grow Frog Fruit for them. Here's the Texan:

Char, here's one from last fall. I was raising dozens of them and had taken a bunch of cats to MOSI. We had a good patch of frogfruit growing by the road in front of my neighbor's house. He agreed not to mow it, so naturally, the county folks came by about three days later and mowed it all the way down. I mean, they scalped it. The whole thread had to listen to me rant and rave. And I'm still mad about it.

Anyway, you can see the Phaon Crescents here have a lighter band on the top wings, but it's not white like the one in your picture.

Yes, I see the difference but it's slight. Too bad about the frog fruit. Angry

When I went out to fill the bird feeders, I spotted this little guy in the leaf litter. I ran to get the camera, and fortunately he (or she) was still there. A first sighting for me of a Gemmed Satyr. Hurray!

Just got back from a road trip to Ft. Worth. We spent Sat. afternoon at the Ft. Worth Botanical Garden and got a great view of the Monarchs. In the Rose Garden section they have planted Pentas (?) and it was filled with scores of Monarchs, bees, and wasps. It looked like a sea of living insects. I couldn't count the butterflies as there were so many flittering about. I was amazed. Saw a few Sulphurs and black swallowtails but couldn't get any photos. At the conservatory section there was a large Porterweed plant and there were a half dozen Monarchs there.

The following pictures were taken here and there along the way. I was excited just to see something different than the Gulf Frits.

"My work is loving the world. Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird — equal seekers of sweetness. Here the clam deep in the speckled sand. Are my boots old? Is my coat torn? Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me keep my mind on what matters, which is my work which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished." — Mary Oliver, from Messenger
