What is this guy's name? One of my plants I bought at home depot is losing his leaves? Or idk what happened but his leaves were not attached just now as I went to move him into some light.

Croton, needing more light. Is it in the pot you purchased it in?

I did repot it the roots were not really moved at all since the roots were the shape of pot and came out all together and I put it entirely into the pot in this pic and it just new soil uhh thinking what brand soil is... miracle grow I'll add a pic. Since then I'd had it inside and is hasn't had much light as I was working on getting that hooked up. . I believe I know what happened now since you said it maybe light he was on top the fire place and too deep into the pot to get enough light .That's why I'd choose to bring him down this morning as soon as I got home with the fixture I needed but I should have acted sooner obviously, I have another one of him too he seems ok his leaves didn't fall off cause I touched it as the other did as I noticed one broken I then broke one as I just slightly touched it. So other plant was also in better light.

Pamela, hate to say it but there's another potential problem - garden soil is not the right stuff to use in pots. It's too heavy, dense and moisture retentive, and if it dries out it becomes like a brick, too easily. You need to use the stuff that is labeled "Potting Soil" which is a mix of peat, perlite, and other fiberous stuff that allows air to the roots because the fibers expand when they're wet than contract to leave a little air space as they dry - a critical thing in a pot that usually doesn't breathe enough.

If you've been potting all your plants in that "Garden Soil" I'd make a plan to gradually re-pot them into potting soil. Garden soil is intended as an amendment for soil outside in a garden. (as it says on the bag)

oh this isnt good news for me but i dont mind doing the work..ty ty ty you know i ask a lady at the store i bought this from. thats kinda frustrating....oh well. ill get around to changing those a little at a time i guess. its about a dozen pots thats really not alot.

These are all beginner mistakes that most of us have made, Pamela.

Take my word for it, though. Not all people working at stores that sell plants know anything about growing them. Especially at places like HD, Lowe's and Wal-Mart the employees often don't know a thing about plants so unless you ask the nursery manager, you're not sure to get good advice there.

Go shopping at a real nursery - i.e. a place that ONLY sells plants - and you'll get good plants and good advice most of the time.

Next, you will need to move the plants near a window. They will be a lot happier!

Pamela, Crotons (Codiaeum) grow outside as landscape plants here in Florida and they get huge. I've never tried growing one as a houseplant; they require high light and high humidity. I agree with Elaine, the garden soil is not a good idea for plants grown inside. I can't offer advice on growing inside but I hope you keep us posted on how your Croton's do.

When the roots are in the shape of the pot as you described and then put, undisturbed, into a bigger pot, that's potting up.

Negative experiences in regard to potting-up, where an undisturbed root ball is placed into a bigger pot with more soil around it, vs. doing a repotting, as described below, can give rise to old wives' tales about plants not liking to be repotted/disturbed. Potting-up a root-bound plant that has roots surrounding the outside root ball often lead to this negative experience because those roots had adapted to accessing oxygen around the outside of the root ball and surrounding them with more dense, soggy-but-airless potting soil will likely lead to suffocation.

The reason bonsai masters are able to keep potted entities alive for hundreds of years is because they care for the roots by trimming them and changing the soil. A plant grows from the roots-up, so if the roots are not healthy, gorgeous foliage will decline &/or no flowers can form. When you unpot a plant and find a pancake of roots at the bottom, chopping that off will give roots a chance to grow normally again for a while and will make removing the old soil easier.

thanks for the great advise. i have 2 plants that was this way.. roots shaped as pots i bought them in. one is doing ok and the other not so much. so im gonna try this. ty
