I rinse them out with garden hose to get rid of all dirt and then just pop them in the dishwasher at highest temp without a tab. Smiling

tx_flower_child, I'm so verbose it's a wonder anyone gets through an entire post!

Welcome to NGA, Shannon! It sounds like you really know how to pamper your soils.

Do you keep chickens or know someone who does? There are a few chicken-growers, and more fans, over in the "Farming Forum". Those threads are more active when people are buying chicks.

I'm guessing that you have a lot of live soil microbes even in pots. My theory is that a thriving and varied soil population actually discourages plant pathogens - by competition, if nothing else.

And I think that some soil microbes fight other soil microbes, and that many plant roots excrete things to attract and encourage the beneficial ones.

I don't expect to be able to maintain thriving soil populations in my pots, so I keep my potting mix much more boring than yours. Mainly bark plus commercial potting soil.

If I had all your ingredients, I'd be feeding them to my raised bed soils, but the main organic source I have is bags of composted, dried manure.

I used to be fanatical about bleaching (chlorine) all of my pots after they were washed in hot, soapy water. Now I just add some bleach to the soapy water, let the pots sit for maybe 10 minutes, swish, rinse and let them air dry. Sometimes I don't add bleach if it's bigger pots that are going to hold larger plants. Washing all those 4- and 6-packs with a toothbrush gets tedious so I try to cut corners elsewhere. No issues here. I will say that some of the plastics do get brittle after being bleached numerous times and are more prone to cracking.
