This came up in a shaded area of the garden. Any ideas?

If it had reddish stems, I would say Douglas Maple (Acer glabrum).

I can't tell for sure but the leaves appear to be alternate rather than opposite? Perhaps you could confirm, Patty. Alternate would rule out maple. I'm wondering if it could be Rubus parviflorus - are the undersides of the leaves hairy?

Edited because my fingers typed odoratus when I was thinking parviflorus.

I thought of Thimbleberry but it didn't seem right. Oh, I know. It looks as though there is one stem that branches. Thimbleberry has underground rhizomes with canes coming off them. From the photos, I can't tell whether the leaves are opposite or alternate but I also can't think of any other plants (other than Thimbleberry and Douglas Maple) with that fuzzy leaf shape.
